Parents Helping Parents

A parent mentoring program that will provide emotional and informational support to new families.  Mentors will be matched with a parent in need of support with a beginning and end date.  The mentor parent will provide peer support by being an active listener, non-judgmental, and empathetic.  The mentor parent will not give advice, advocate or be an expert for the supported parent.

—Listening

Parents need careful, empathic, respectful, non-judgmental listening

—Partnerships

Professionals and others who help identify the families’ vision of the future and then work with families toward that vision

—Celebration

Every child should be celebrated and accepted as he/she is and be acknowledged as a gift to the community.

—Information & Support

Families need current information on their child’s disability and services. They also need opportunities to talk with other families.

—Hope

A vision of a positive future may well be the most helpful thing for families and the most difficult to come by.
