Inclusive Practices in Today’s Schools: Access and Achievement for All Students

Northshore Families Helping Families will host a free education conference, “Inclusive Practices in Today’s Schools: Access and Achievement for All Students,” for parents, educators and professionals on Friday, August 21st from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm at Clarion Inn & Suites Conference Center in Covington (501 N Highway 190). Check-in and continental breakfast will begin at 8:30 am. A buffet lunch will also be provided.

Conference presenter, Marilyn Friend, Ph.D., has spent her career as a general education teacher, special education teacher, teacher educator and staff developer. She is Professor Emerita of Education in the Department of Specialized Education Services at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and is Past President of the Council for Exceptional Children. Dr. Friend has consulted with school professionals nationally and internationally and is the author or co-author of three widely used college textbooks on special education; more than 50 articles about collaboration, inclusive practices, and co-teaching; and a highly popular video series on co-teaching and other inclusive practices.

Dr. Friend will address the following topics during the full day conference:
1. Students with disabilities and the Common Core State Standards, including the complexities of providing needed supports in the general education setting
2. Co-teaching as a vehicle for reaching the contemporary goals of meaningful curriculum access, inclusiveness, and high achievement
3. Specially designed instruction delivered in general education settings
4. The place for services in a separate setting and criteria for decisions related to such services
5. The importance of and strategies for family/school communication and collaboration in order to foster positive student outcomes
6. Questions and concerns that you have about inclusive practices appropriate in the current education climate
